Oh, Paris… the fashion capital of the world. From berets to plaid sets to an abundant amount of floral prints, it was easy to see what Netflix’s Emily in Paris was trying to pull off. However, the outdated pieces and vibrant prints have led to many commentaries and confusion from viewers worldwide.
The show stars Lily Collins as Emily, a young woman working in the marketing field with a focus on social media engagement. She starts off in Chicago and eventually makes her way to Paris when her boss has an unexpected pregnancy announcement.
Despite a seemingly decent plot and good casting choices, there have been tons of criticism from the French, from actual social media editors, and of course, from those pursuing fashion.
Fashion has moved away from the meshing of different patterns and materials. Many on Twitter have taken to voicing their concerns over the show’s styling choices with several people expressing their disappointment in the loud outfit choices. References to Gossip Girl’s 2007 style, Sex and the City, and The Devil Wears Prada’s set design showcase the familiar feel that the film tried to emulate but sadly didn’t accomplish.
As quirky as Emily’s outfits were, not all of the costumes were terrible. Camille, Emily’s friend in the show, has an easy-going style that could have been easily replicated with Emily’s outfits. Sylvie, Emily’s daunting French boss, had a sleek and sophisticated style. Her timeless looks were classic and minimalistic, proving that sometimes less is more.
While color-blocking is wonderful and accessories can add flair to an outfit, it’s important to not overdo it and rather embrace the simplistic style of the French.
Perhaps the tackiness and overblown outfits were a metaphor to show an American living in France, or possibly, just as Emily could have benefited to learn a little French before moving, it would have helped to open a Vogue magazine or two. We can only hope that Emily will somehow grow into herself and discover her style in a possible season two.
